This fascinating book is a work of Caspar Stoll (c. 1725–1791), collector of butterflies, a German by birth, but living in Amsterdam. Its 42 hand-coloured etched plates present butterflies of Suriname. Stoll was a friend and fellow collector of Pieter Cramer (1721–1776), Dutch merchant and entomologist, whose work about the butterflies of Asia, Africa and America (De uitlandsche Kapellen voorkomende in de drie Waereld-Deelen Asia, Africa en America) is completed with this volume. This series, originally published in separate booklets, is a key work of the early history of entomology.
